According to Sky Sports Premier League champions Chelsea are favourites to sign Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who is being linked with a move to a number of clubs this summer.
Begovic is highly-rated, but has just 12 months left on his contract in the Potteries. Stoke boss Mark Hughes and chief executive have reported talked with the Bosnian international in an effort to persuade him to stay at the club.
He was out-of-favour as Stoke number one towards the end of last season and England under-21 international Jack Butland was preferred in goal, which Begovic did not take well according to reports.
Since arriving at Stoke in 2010 he has established himself a reputation as one of the most reliable ‘keepers in the Premier League. His fine performances led to speculation over his next move, with Manchester United reportedly showing an interest.
Aston Villa had a bid of around £10million rejected for the ‘keeper on Friday, but Chelsea are now the favourites to nab the former-Portsmouth star this summer.
Chelsea are looking for a back-up ‘keeper to Belgian starlet Thibaut Courtois, with current back-up Petr Cech on the verge of completing a move to Premier League rivals Arsenal.
Begovic is a very capable ‘keeper and it would be a major surprise if he moved to Chelsea, as his game would be very limited, with Courtois expected to have a glittering future with the Blues.
It would seem like a strange move for a ‘keeper who would most likely strengthen most Premier League team’s goalkeeping options.
Will Asmir Begovic sign for Stoke this summer?
