Premier League champions Chelsea went into yesterday’s transfer deadline day looking to bring in quality and ended up signing a Ligue One defender and a Championship defender, not exactly the quality that Blues fans were hoping for.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho seemed convinced that Everton would eventually cave in and sell England youngster John Stones. However, fair play to the Merseysider’s they held firm and held on to one of their prize assets.

The Toffees resistance and three rejected bids for the 21-year-old meant that Chelsea had to look elsewhere. The Blues decided to turn their attention PSG’s Brazilian defender Marquinhos.

However, the Blues were spurned in their efforts to sign a centre-back, as the Parisians are believed to have turned down two bids between the region of £25million and £40million.

Off they went in search of more centre-backs and in the end signed Senegalese international centre-back Papy Djilobodji from Ligue One club Nantes for around £2.7million, as the 26-year-old was in the last year of his contract.

The Blues were not done there though, as they spent £4million on Reading’s Jamaican international Michael Hector and immediately loaned the 23-year-old back to the Championship club.

Both of the signings were underwhelming considering that the Blues were previously chasing players like Stones and Marquinhos.

Djilobodji is only likely to be a back-up centre-back at Stamford Bridge and is unlikely to threaten the places of Messrs Cahill, Terry or Zouma.

Chelsea have made a difficult start to the campaign and their deadline day dealings maybe sum-up their shambolic start to the campaign.

Will Papy Djilobodji be a good signing for Chelsea?
