Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic celebrates equalising for his team in their 2-1 Champions League victory over Manchester City

Manchester City opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 home defeat by Italian champions Juventus at the Etihad Stadium.

City started the brighter and record signing Raheem Sterling saw an effort saved early on by Gianluigi Buffon, after Brazilian Fernandinho had put the winger through on-goal.

Juve also had a Paul Pogba goal ruled out on 12 minutes for offside. The game was pretty even with little between the two sides and little goal mouth action, with City maybe edging it.

The Citizens took the lead on 57th minutes. Under pressure from Vincent Kompany, Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini put the ball past his own ‘keeper.

The visitors equalised on 70 minutes though, as Mario Mandzukic applied the finishing touch to Paul Pogba’s cross at the far post. It got even better for the Italian champions 11 minutes later, as they took the lead.

Spanish international striker Álvaro Morata picked the ball just outside the area and produced a superb curling effort that beat Joe Hart all ends up.

In an effort to rescue a point from the game, City boss Manuel Pellegrini brought on Sergio Aguero late in the second half.

The Argentinian was not expected to feature, but even his appearance off the substitute’s bench could not rescue anything for City.

Can Manchester City still win Group D?
