Former-England playmaker Joe Cole has joined League One side Coventry on an emergency 35 day deal.

The 33-year-old is currently contracted to Premier League Aston Villa, but has made just one substitute appearance this season in the Capital One Cup against Notts County.

Cole has made just 16 appearances for the Villans since moving to the Midlands in the summer of 2014 from West Ham. The move was supposed to revive his career, but he has failed to recapture the form of his early career.

The Sky Blues are clearly delighted to have signed Cole. Boss Tony Mowbray told the clubs official website: “I’m delighted to welcome such a high-calibre player to the club,”

“Joe has a great pedigree, both on the domestic and international stage, and I’m sure he’ll have a fantastic impact during his time at the club.

“I’ve met with Joe and he has watched us play several times this season. He likes the way we play the game and because of that, he has shown a real enthusiasm to come and play for the club.

“He’s a player who will give us another option in the forward areas and I’m sure the squad are looking forward to working with him.

“We’ve got plenty of games coming up which will be crucial to us maintaining our early-season form and I’m looking forward to seeing Joe in action for the Sky Blues.”

Coventry are currently fifth in the third tier and challenging for promotion back to the Championship after struggling against financial troubles in recent years.

Can Joe Cole help Coventry’s promotion push?
