According to Sky Sports, Newcastle are close to appointing Steve McClaren as their new boss. The 54-year-old was recently dismissed by Derby, after the Rams failed to make the Championship play-offs.

The Midlanders promotion campaign suffered when former-Middlesbrough boss McClaren was linked with a move to the Magpies.

The Rams were still heading for the play-offs until the final day of the season when they dropped out of the top six.

Despite being sacked by County, there seems to be a general consensus that he had done a good job with the club and had the team playing good attacking football.

McClaren is an experienced boss and has enjoyed periods of success at Middlesbrough, helping Newcastle’s arch-rivals to seventh in the Premier League and an appearance in the UEFA Cup final appearance against Sevilla.

He won the Eredivisie with FC Twente, but has also endured poor spells in charge of German club Wolfsburg and the England national team.

Newcastle are in search of a new boss after narrowly avoiding relegation last season under hapless interim boss John Carver. The likes of Michael Laudrup, Patrick Vieira and David Moyes have all been linked with the job.

However, McClaren is the favourite to be the next Newcastle boss and if the recent reports are to be believed then he will be the man in charge of the Magpies next season.

He will have a major job on his hands to improve confidence and morale following last season’s terrible campaign though.

Can Steve McClaren inspire a revival on Tyneside?
