According to Sky Sports, Newcastle are close to appointing Steve McClaren as their new boss.

Talks have taken place and it is believed that a deal could be completed later today.

This news comes after interim boss John Carver and coach Steve Stone both left their roles on Tyneside.

Favourite

McClaren has been the favourite for the job ever since Alan Pardew left for Crystal Palace in January. The former-Middlesbrough boss was sacked at the end of the season by Derby, after the Rams finished eighth in the Championship.

Sacked

McClaren had managed the Midlanders for two years and they looked good for promotion last season. However, speculation over McClaren joining the Magpies apparently unsettled the Rams players. An end of season collapse saw them fall out of the play-off spots on the last day of the season.

Mixed

The 54-year-old has endured mixed fortunes in his managerial career so far. He enjoyed success at Middlesbrough winning the league cup and finishing seventh place in the Premier League table.

He also won an Eredivisie title with FC Twente, in the first of two spells in Holland.

However, he has failed with the likes of Wolfsburg in Germany and Nottingham Forest in the Championship. Even his time at Derby was considered a mixed bag, as the Rams made the play-off final in his first year, but then failed last season.

Stability

Newcastle are now in need of some stability, after a terrible season in the top-flight nearly resulted in relegation to the second tier.

McClaren certainly has the experience to be a success with the north east club, but after such an unpredictable career anything could happen next season on Tyneside.

Can Steve McClaren bring success to Newcastle?
