Dutch international striker Robin van Persie has completed his move from Manchester United to Fenerbahce for a fee in the region of £4.8million.

Van Persie had been based in the English Premier League since 2004 when he joined Arsenal from Feyenoord. He has become one of the most prolific goalscorers in the Premier League era.

He moved to United in 2012 to win the top-flight title and did just that in his debut season. He also won the English top-flight’s golden boot award as he produced one of the most consistent seasons of his career.

Van Persie has enjoyed less success in the last two seasons though, as injuries have hampered his time at Old Trafford. The Dutchman scored ten goals in 27 appearances last season in all competitions, but never really hit top form for the Red Devils.

He fell out of favour with compatriot Louis van Gaal towards the end of the campaign and was dropped from the United starting line-up. That was the beginning of the end for Van Persie’s career at United.

The 31-year-old is the second player to make the trip from Manchester to Istanbul this summer, as Portuguese winger Nani made the same journey last week. The Turkish giants obviously have big ambitions ahead of the new campaign.

They finished second in the Turkish top-flight last season and are in the Champions League this season. The signings of Van Persie and Nani will add quality and experience to an already talented squad of players at the club.

Should United have kept Robin van Persie?
