Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed that England striker Daniel Sturridge will not participate in the Reds Europa League game against Swiss side Sion.

Sturridge has made just two Premier league appearances since recovering from long-term injury. The former-Chelsea striker scored a brace in the Reds 3-2 win over Aston villa at the weekend, but will not be risked in the Europa League.

Rodgers confirmed Sturridge’s absence at his pre-match press conference. The Northern Irishman said: “Daniel won’t be involved in the game. We’ll keep him fresh for the weekend. He’s still building his way towards fitness.

“Our approach to this game will be how it’s been in the competition so far; it’s an opportunity for players on the fringes.

“It’s a game where we’re going to need to be patient. Sion sits deep and then play a counter attacking game.”

The Reds kick-off their Europa League campaign with a 1-1 draw with French Ligue One side Bordeaux. The Reds are currently second in the group.

The side from Merseyside are likely to field fringe players, because they faced a crucial Merseyside derby with Everton on Sunday afternoon. The Toffees are currently a point above their arch-rivals in the Premier League table.

Is Brendan Rodgers right to field fringe players in the Europa League?
