Two of the favourites for the Premier League title Arsenal and Chelsea this season suffered disappointing results on the opening day of the season.

Chelsea opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Swansea at Stamford Bridge. The Blues opened the scoring through an Oscar free-kick from a tight angle.

The Swans hit back though, as Andre Ayew kept his cool in the area to fire home after a slight scramble in the Chelsea area.

Parity did not last long though. Chelsea regained the lead in fortune fashion, as Willian’s shot from the right took a massive deflection off Federico Fernandez and looped over Lukasz Fabianski into the net.

The Swans came out with real purpose in the second half and on 52 minutes earned their reward. Blues ‘keeper Thibaut Courtois rushed-out of his goal and clattered into Bafetimbi Gomis, which result in the Swans being awarded a penalty kick and Courtois being shown a red card.

The French striker then stepped-up to score from the resulting spot-kick. The Swans pushed for a winner, but could not find it despite substitute ‘keeper Asmir Begovic producing a good save from Wayne Routledge.

Elsewhere Manchester United secured a slightly nervy 1-0 home victory over Tottenham, as an own-goal from Spurs full-back Kyle Walker was enough to give the Red Devils victory.

Premier League new boys Watford were pegged-back twice at Everton to draw 2-2 and earn a very decent point on their return to the top-flight.

Leicester City made an enjoyable start to their campaign by beating Sunderland 4-2 at the King Power Stadium in Claudio Ranieri’s first game in charge.

Other Premier League results:

Norwich 1-3 Crystal Palace

Bournemouth 0-1 Aston Villa

Newcastle 2-2 Southampton

Stoke 0-1 Liverpool
