According to Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas, the French club could be about to seal the signing of Manchester United full-back Rafael, with the Brazilian in France ahead of a medical.

Aulas Tweeted: “Raphael [sic] has arrived from Manchester U. We’re waiting for an agreement with MU on the transfer. He’s in a very Brazilian good mood.”

The clubs have yet to agree a fee for the 25-year-old, but that is not expected to be a problem as he is out-of-favour with United boss Louis van Gaal. A fee of around £7million has been suggested, but it is believed that the French club wish to pay less.

The Brazilian has just one-year left on his Red Devils contract and United have already replaced him with Italian international Mateo Darmian who arrived from Serie A side Torino.

Rafael was regarded as a very promising full-back in his younger days, but injuries have hampered his development and it looks like United have lost patience with Brazilian international.

Rafael joined United eight years ago with his brother Fabio, but his brother never made the grade at United either.

He made over 100 appearances for the Red Devils, struggled to gain a regular place at right-back last season, with Ecuadorian Antonio Valencia preferred in the position.

Rafael will be hoping that he can stay injury-free and start to fulfil his potential in Ligue One, because he did show flashes of his ability while with the Red Devils.  He will need to put in more consistent display in France if he is to revive his stuttering career.

Was Rafael worth keeping at United?
