Despite dominating possession Manchester United suffered a 3-0 defeat at midtable Everton on Sunday.

The Toffees took the lead on five minutes on the counter-attack.

Seamus Coleman latched on to the ball and ran half the length of the pitch and saw his cross cleared as far James McCarthy, who stumbled past tackles from Daley Blind and Paddy McNair, before rolling the ball past David de Gea.

United then went on to dominate the ball, but seemed to lack the incisiveness to threaten Tim Howard in the Everton goal, although former-Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini did fire over the bar after Gareth Barry had been dispossessed.

Everton doubled their lead on 35 minutes. The home side had threatened with consecutive corner kicks, before making it third time lucky with a third.

Leighton Baines swung in the corner kick from the right and young centre-back John Stones bulleted a header towards goal, that Ashley Young could do little about on the United goal line.

The Red Devils best chance of the second half fell to Wayne Rooney early on, as the England international saw an effort from close-range saved by Tim Howard. United continued to dominate possession, but produced very little to worry the Toffees.

The home side confirmed the victory in the 74th minute. Ross Barkley played a ball through the middle of the United defence towards Romelu Lukaku, who was standing in an offside position.

However, the striker let the ball run to international teammate Kevin Mirallas who ran in on goal and slotted the ball past De Gea.

In the end United lacked the know-how to find a way past the Toffees and remain in fourth-position in the Premier League table, seven points clear of fifth-place Liverpool.

Will Manchester United finish in the top three this season?
