The Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool finished in a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park in the early Premier League kick-off on Sunday.
The visitors looked dangerous and retained possession, but it was the home side who had the two best early attempts on goal. Ross Barkley fired in a superb free-kick and Steven Naismith met it with a powerful free header, only for Simon Mignolet to produce a great save.
On half an hour Mignolet produced another good save, this time saving from a good snap shot from James McCarthy from the edge of the area. Despite those chances it was the Reds who struck first on 41 minutes.
Danny Ings was left completely unmarked from a corner kick and the striker headed home past Tim Howard in the Everton goal.
The home side hit back in first half stoppage-time. Gerard Deulofeu fired in a low cross that Emre Can cleared against Martin Skrtel, and Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku was there to hit a powerful effort past Mignolet from eight yards out.
The second half was end to end, with the home side just shading. Roberto Martinez’s side pushed late on for a winner, but failed to find a breakthrough.
The draw leaves Everton in sixth position in the Premier League, while Liverpool are now tenth in the Premier League table.
