Arsenal are the Trotters of Premier League football. I am referring to the comedy family from Only Fools and Horses, not the Trotters of Bolton Wanderers, who can only dream of being like Arsenal.
Anyway the reason being Del Trotters catchphrase of ‘This time next year we will be millionaires’ is very apt for Gunners fans, because every season their players and staff seem to say ‘This time next year we will Premier League champions’.
The Trotters did achieve the feat of becoming millionaires eventually, but in typical comedic-tragedy they lost the money. Arsenal could be a similar story, but with the Premier League trophy not their money!
If Arsenal does win a title in the next couple of years the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United will put that right by spending big.
Despite being third in the Premier League table Arsene Wenger’s team are still a long way away from Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in terms of quality.
I can just hear the Arsenal players and staff saying ‘This time next year we will be Premier League champions’ at the end of next season.
The Gunners have to start signing real quality players and strengthen their squad so that they can compete with Chelsea.
Their three closest rivals are likely to spend big this summer, so Arsenal need to follow suit. However, just like Del Boy Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger loves a bargain, so it may be unlikely!
The comparison between Del Trotter’s clan and Arsenal may be slightly harsh, but in my mind both are Londoners who never quite achieve their goals in life.
