Promising young Liverpool defender Joe Gomez could miss the rest of the season

According to Sky Sports, Liverpool’s versatile young defender Joe Gomez will miss the rest of the season after rupturing a cruciate ligament injury on Tuesday night for England’s under-21 team.

The 18-year-old picked-up the injury ten minutes from the end of England’s 3-0 victory over Kazakhstan in Coventry.

Initially the injury was not thought of as serious, but later scans revealed that the damage was worse than first believed.

Gomez joined the Reds this summer from Championship Charlton for a fee of around £5million. The youngster started the first five Premier League games of the season at left-back under former boss Brendan Rodgers, but recently lost his place as the Northern Irishman tried in vain to find a winning formula.

The youngster also started at the heart of defence in the Europa League. However the injury will no doubt curtail his development. The 18-year-old will now have to wait to impress new Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, who oversees his first game as Liverpool against Spurs on Saturday.

Gomez is regarded as a bright young English prospect and everybody connected with the Reds will be hoping that the youngster comes back stronger from his injury.

Will injury curtail Joe Gomez’s career development?
