Dutch international Georginio Wijnaldum was the hero last weekend for Newcastle. Can he be the hero in the north east derby?

Newcastle travels the short distance to face Sunderland in the north east derby on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies head to the Stadium of Light knowing that they have suffered five straight derby defeats against the Black Cats.

Sunderland has not yet claimed their first Premier League victory of the season and will be eying this game as the perfect chance to break that duck.

However, Newcastle will head into this game in good spirits, following breaking their own duck last weekend by hammering Norwich 6-2 at St James Park.

Holland international midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum grabbed four goals, while strikers Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic also both got on the scoresheet. The trio finally clicked and the result was a vibrant attacking display from the Magpies.

Despite the superb attacking display, their defence once again looked vulnerable to counter-attacks and any sort of threat from the visitors.

Sunderland have been terrible at the back this season, but the arrival of Sam Allardyce as Black Cats boss will no doubt make the bottom team far more solid, whether that will enough to claim a win in this clash remains to be seen.

Newcastle fans will feel that their team now has the attacking threat to break that derby hoodoo, but history has taught them to expect the unexpected from their team.
