Aston Villa and Belgium striker Christian Benteke is being heavily linked with a move to Liverpool by Sky Sports, who claim the Merseysider’s are about to meet the £32.5million release clause in the Belgian’s contract.
Liverpool are not the only Premier League club interested in signing the 24-year-old though, as both Chelsea and Manchester United have also been linked with a bid for the big Belgian international this summer.
His goal ratio of 49 goals in 101 appearances for Villa since joining from his homeland club of Genk tells you all you need to know about his prowess in front of goal. That goalscoring record is impressive by most strikers’ standards, especially in the Premier League.
The stat is made even more impressive by the fact that he has been playing in a mediocre Villa team, that has for the majority of his time at the club been fighting at the bottom end of the Premier League table.
The striker has all the attributes to become a world-class striker, even if he is not already. He is big, strong and pacey. With the right service he could score lots of goals.
If he does move to Liverpool, as is being predicted, then he will join the Reds striking ranks of Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings, Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini. Surely the arrival of Benteke would signal the end of either Borini or Lambert on Merseyside?
For me Benteke would be worth the £32million fee. If he stays fit then on his day he can cause any defence problems and Liverpool are in need of a new quality striker this summer.
