Everton have completed the signing of England international midfielder Tom Cleverley on a free transfer.

The midfielder has agreed a five-year-deal with the Merseyside club and will officially join the Toffees when his Manchester United contract expires on July 1st.

In-demand

The 25-year-old spent last season on-loan at Aston Villa, who he helped to the FA Cup final and Premier League survival.

Villa were desperate to sign him on a permanent deal and the likes of Arsenal and Spurs had also been linked with a move for the midfielder.

However, he chose to move to Merseyside to be reunited with Toffees boss Roberto Martinez, who he had worked with before during a loan spell at Wigan earlier in his career.

The Spaniard is a big fan of Cleverley and has always talked very highly of the former-United star. The former-Wigan boss even defended the midfielder when he was being heavily criticised by Manchester United fans.

Limited

Martinez is reported to have a very limited budget this summer, so signing a player of Cleverley’s age and value on a free could help him pursue other targets in the transfer market.

Cleverley has never quite lived up to his potential, but towards the end of last season started to produce better performances under Tim Sherwood for Villa.

Maybe with the right guidance the midfielder can go on to have a bright career and prove an inspired signing for the Toffees.

This could be a great deal for everybody. Cleverley has the chance to represent a relatively big club and Everton get a player with decent potential without having to pay a fee. Sounds like a fair deal to me.

Will Tom Cleverley be a good signing for Everton?
