Borussia Dortmund’s long-serving boss Jurgen Klopp will leave the club at the end of the campaign. The highly-rated tactician revealed his intended exit at a press conference on Wednesday.
Confirmation
Klopp told the press conference: “I always said in that moment where I believe I am not the perfect coach any more for this extraordinary club, I will say so,”
“I believe this is the right decision at the right time. I just wanted to make my decision known now so that the club can plan for the future.
“I have not had any contact with any other clubs, either in England or elsewhere, nor have I any plans to take a sabbatical.
“I chose this time to announce it, because in the last few years, some player decisions were made late and there was no time to react.”
Successful
Klopp has been highly-successful at Dortmund in his seven years in charge, winning the Bundesliga twice, the German Cup and also guiding the club to the Champions League final in 2013, where they were defeated 2-1 by arch domestic rivals Bayern Munich.
Disappointing
Despite those successes this season has been a hard one for Klopp and his team. At one point BVB were bottom of the Bundesliga, but currently sit tenth in the German top-flight. Klopp’s team are still just seven points away from the relegation zone.
Premier League
Klopp has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, especially as the long-term successor to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.
However, as soon as the announcement was made that Klopp would leave the German giants he was immediately installed as the favourite to replace under-pressure Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini this summer.
Intelligent
Klopp is regarded as one of football’s great thinkers and tacticians. He restored Dortmund to the top of the German football tree on very little resources and is still regarded as one of the best coaches in world football.
It would certainly be interesting to see the 47-year-old pitting his wits against the likes of Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger and Louis van Gaal next season.
