According to the Daily Express, Liverpool are set to make a move for former midfielder Xabi Alonso.

The Spaniard has played a key part in Pep Guardiola’s spell at German champions Bayern Munich, but Tuttomercatoweb are reporting that he will not be offered a new deal in Bavaria.

Those reports have reportedly alerted Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, who is believed to be an admirer of the former Spanish international.

Alonso spent five years at Anfield from 2004 to 2009 and was part of the Reds team that won the Champions League in 2005 against AC Milan, as Rafa Benitez’s team came back from three goals down to win the trophy on penalty kicks.

The midfielder moved to Real Madrid in 2009 and spent five years with the Spanish giants. He also won the Champions League with Los Blancos in 2014, which was the clubs tenth European Cup.

The defensive midfielder turns 34 later this month, so is very much in the veteran stage of his career. However the midfielder still has a lot to offer and his football brain seems in good working order.

Maybe Alonso would enjoy one last stint in the Premier League, after previously admitting he is still a big fan of Liverpool.

Would Xabi Alonso be a good signing for Liverpool?
