Milan clubs still struggling to recapture glory days

The Derby della Madonnina between AC Milan and Internazionale finished goalless last night.

The Milan derby meant very little in Serie A, as the two sides currently sit ninth and tenth respectively in the Italian top-flight.

It is a far cry from when the two teams from Italy’s fashion capital were the strutting catwalk models of Italian football. Juventus are now once again the dominant force in Serie A, with the likes of Lazio, Napoli and Roma attempting in vein to catch the Old Lady.

In truth, the decline of the two Milan giants had coincided with the decline of Italian football.

The fact that Juventus were promoted from Serie B and instantly were title challengers tells you a lot about the decline of the Italian domestic game in the last decade, or so.

The Italian top-flight has enjoyed something of a slight resurgence in the last few years, but the two Milan clubs have not.

Poor managerial appointments and signings have left two of the giants of Italian football still looking to recapture the glory days.

Bosses seem to come and go at both clubs without ever really making too much of an impact. Current Rossoneri boss Filippo Inzaghi has been in charge less than a year and there is already talk of him being replaced.

At Inter, Roberto Mancini is less than six months into his second stint at the club and has a job on his hands to turn the Nerazzurri’s fortunes around.

It will take a lot for either of the Milan sides to rival Juve in the near future, but both sets of fans will remain optimistic that they can once again challenge at the top of the Serie A table.

Can the two Milan clubs challenge at the top of Serie A in the near future?
