Newcastle face an anxious wait to find out the extent of Tim Krul’s knee injury picked-up on international duty

Beleaguered Premier League club Newcastle are sweating over the fitness of goalkeeper Tim Krul after he was substituted in Holland’s 2-1 Euro 2016 qualifying win in Kazakhstan.

The highly-rated ‘keeper fell awkwardly on his knee towards the end of the victory.

The Magpies are currently bottom of the Premier League table and have failed to win any of their top-flight games so far this season. Their Dutch ‘keeper has been one of their top performers in recent seasons and it would be a big blow for the Magpies to lose him.

What makes matters worse for the north east club is the fact that second choice ‘keeper Karl Darlow is also currently out injured. The clubs third choice goalkeeper is Rob Elliot who recently received a call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad.

Newcastle’s poor start to the season has already had a minority of fans calling for the head of boss Steve McClaren. If Krul’s injury is serious then it will be a bad blow to McClaren’s new regime at St James Park.

Only Sunderland has conceded more goals than the Magpies this season and Krul being injured is unlikely to help improve the team’s defensive solidarity.

How big a blow would it be to Newcastle to lose Tim Krul through injury?
