Southampton have sign young Spanish striker Juanmi from Malaga

Southampton have started strengthening their squad with the £5million signing of highly-rated young Spanish striker Juanmi from Malaga.

The striker has signed a four-year contract with the south coast club.

The 22-year-old is highly-rated and made his debut for the senior Spanish national team against the Netherlands in a March friendly.

Highly-rated

Juanmi is highly-rated and big things have been expected of the striker since he broke into the Malaga team in 2010.

He scored on his league debut against Getafe to become the clubs youngest ever goalscorer. However, he has not quite lived-up to his potential since then.

Juanmi had struggled for regular first team football until last season when he scored eight goals in 34 appearances last season.

Competition

The young Spaniard is set to offer competition to Italian striker Graziano Pelle, who endured a mixed campaign for the Saints last season. The Italian international enjoyed a good start to the campaign, before going through a goal draught.

The 29-year-old finished his debut campaign in English football with 14 goals, but the new arrival should offer competition to Pelle for his starting place at St Marys.

Big Season

Following the Saints seventh-place in the Premier League last season they will play in the Europa League next season, so no doubt Dutch boss Ronald Koeman will be keen to have a bigger squad at his disposal for the new campaign.

Koeman has proven himself to be a shrewd operator in the transfer market and no doubt there will be more exciting new signings heading to St Marys this summer.

Will Juanmi be successful in English football?
