Sunderland are looking for a new boss after veteran Dutchman Dick Advocaat quit following Saturday’s 2-2 home draw against West Ham.
The Black Cats threw away a two goal lead and also saw winger Jeremain Lens dismissed near the hour mark.
Sunderland are currently second from bottom in the Premier League table after a terrible start to their league campaign. The Black Cats have failed to win any of their league games and have picked-up just three points from eight league games.
The 68-years-old decision to quit the club comes as little surprise, as he was reluctant to sign a permanent contract in the summer, after helping the Black Cats stay up while in temporary charge at the end of last season.
The Dutchman was reluctant to sign a permanent contract because he was not offered enough funds to bring in players who would improve the team enough to stave off the threat of another season of fighting against the drop to the Championship.
Advocaat has taken the decision to step down to allow the club as much time as possible to bring a replacement to save the team from relegation. The Dutchman has taken the unusual step of deciding to turn down any financial compensation.
