Italian club Fiorentina have reached an agreement with former-Swansea midfielder Paulo Sousa for the Portuguese to become the clubs next boss.
Sousa has recently left Swiss club Basel by mutual consent. His appointment is expected to be officially confirmed later today.
Sacked
Sousa has a big job on his hands to replicate last season’s fourth-place finish, achieved under former-Roma striker Vincenzo Montella. The 41-year-old was sacked earlier this month, despite the Viola’s lofty finish in the Serie A table.
Montella was fired after making comments about the clubs supporters in the media and accused of lacking respect for the Viola fans.
Experience
Sousa has experience of Serie A from his playing days when he played for the likes Juventus, Internazionale and Parma. He should know the language and how the league works, which will help him.
Patchy
His managerial career has been a story of many different clubs in a short space of time.
The Viola will be his seventh club in as many years in his club managerial career, after starting his coaching career with the Portuguese under-16’s. Sousa has managed QPR, Swansea, Leicester, Videoton, Maccabi Tel Aviv and most recently Basel.
Sousa has won titles in Israel and Switzerland in his last two posts, but both clubs had been dominant in their respective countries before Sousa’s arrival.
Managing in Italy with the Viola will be a whole new challenge for the 44-year-old, as he attempts to get the men from Florence into the Champions League next season.
