Liverpool have continued their summer recruitment drive with the £3.5million signing of youngster Joe Gomez from Championship side Charlton. The 18-year-old has signed a five-year deal with the Reds.

Gomez is regarded as a star of the future by many. The youngster played for England at the under-17 European Championships in 2014, a competition which England won.

He is currently in the England under-19 squad and is expected to become a full international in the future.

Gomez was believed to be being tracked by a number of top-flight clubs, including Aston Villa and West Ham, but Liverpool could claim something of a coup with his signing.

Gomez had been with Charlton since he was 10, but the Addicks felt like they could not stand in the way of their academy product making a move to the Premier League.

The youngster made 21 appearances in the second tier last season, enjoying a successful debut campaign for the Addicks.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been busy this summer, having already completed the signing of Danny Ings, James Milner and Adam Bogdan.

The Reds boss will be looking for his team to enjoy a rather more successful campaign than last season, when they finished sixth and went out of the Champions League at the group stage.

Gomez could turn out to be a shrewd signing from the Liverpool boss as he attempts to improve his squad ahead of another challenge for a top four place next season.

Will Joe Gomez play much first football at Liverpool?
