Jamie Vardy has enjoyed a meteoric rise to stardom in the last three years.

His recent good form in helping to keep club side Leicester in the Premier League has led to a first call-up to England for the friendly against the Republic of Ireland and the Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovenia next month.

At 28 years old it is fair to say that Vardy is a late arrival on the international scene.

However, a few years ago he was probably only dreaming of playing Premier League football, never mind international football.

He was playing non-league football with the likes of Halifax and Fleetwood Town, who he helped gain promotion to the football league.

Just after helping Fleetwood to promotion he completed a non-league record £1million move to Leicester.

Vardy struggled in his first season with the Foxes, but was far more impressive in his second season helping the side from the Midlands to win the Championship title.

That season he also won the clubs Player of the Year award after scoring 16 goals in the second tier.

This season goals have been harder to come by for Vardy, with just four scored, but his work rate and energy have been a key to Leicester staying in the Premier League, as has his eight assists for the campaign.

Jamie Vardy’s time in the England squad may be fleeting, but the forward is an example to every aspiring footballer out there that if you work hard and never give up anything is possible, including playing for your country. Good luck Jamie!

Does Jamie Vardy deserve to be in the England squad?
