Newcastle winger Sammy Ameobi has joined Championship Cardiff on a season-long loan deal.

The 23-year-old had recently committed his long-term future to the Magpies by signing a new two-year deal on Tyneside.

Ameobi has struggled to make a sustained impact in the first team at Newcastle due to a lack of consistency. The winger scored two goals and collected two assists last season, while making 25 Premier League appearances.

The loan move is an opportunity for Amoebi to gain some valuable first team experience and impress new Magpies boss Steve McClaren.

In truth the winger has a reputation for being mercurial. He does have skill and technique, but needs to work on the other parts of his game. His inconsistency has meant he has only started 21 Premier League games since making his debut four years ago.

Elsewhere, Newcastle could face a battle to sign highly-rated PSV Eindhoven midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum from Premier League rivals Everton.

The Dutch international midfielder is in-demand this summer, with Russian club Zenit St Petersburg also believed to be interested in signing him.

Wijnaldum has developed a reputation as a highly-versatile midfielder in his time in Eindhoven and is expected to move on to a bigger league this summer.

Wijnaldum is rated in the £15million bracket and Magpies boss Steve McClaren knows the midfielder well from his time in the Eredivisie with FC Twente.

Everton have already strengthened their midfield options this summer by bringing in Gerard Deulofeu and Tom Cleverly, but are believed to be interested in signing the former-Feyenoord star.

Can Sammy Ameobi find consistency in the Championship?
