Arsenal and England forward Theo Walcott is set to hold showdown talks with boss Arsene Wenger, with Walcott’s contract expiring next summer.

The Daily Mail is reporting that the two are set to discuss the player’s future after next Saturday’s FA Cup final.

In truth Walcott has struggled to fulfil his potential in an Arsenal or England shirt.

He burst onto the football scene as a 17-year-old at Southampton and earned a big move to north London. Walcott was even named in England’s 2006 World Cup, despite having played very little club football.

His recent progression has been hampered by injury. Walcott has only recently recovered from a knee injury which sidelined him for a year. Since his return from injury his playing time has been restricted and he has suffered a few setbacks along the way.

At 26 years-old Walcott needs to start proving his worth to Arsenal. Boss Arsene Wenger has described him as ‘special’, but so often Walcott can be such a frustrating player to watch. He has pace and skill.

However the final product is often missing and he still makes some poor decisions on the pitch. Walcott has enjoyed purple patches in his career, but can never seem to stay consistent with his performances.

If Walcott wants to gain a regular place in the Arsenal first team, then he must somehow find consistency in his performance, or he will continue to struggle in north London.

The 26-year-old now needs to step-up and start to fulfilling some of his potential before it is too late.

Should Theo Walcott be a regular in the Arsenal first team?
