According to the Daily Mirror, Tottenham are set to launch a £20million bid for Everton and Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy.

The 24-year-old has immensely impressed in the heart of the Toffees midfield since his £13million move from Wigan in 2013. His good form is believed to have also attracted the attention of the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal.

Tottenham are looking to have a squad overhaul this summer with a number of players being moved on after underachieving in north London.

One of those players, Aaron Lennon, spent the second half of last season on-loan at Everton and could be used as part of any deal for McCarthy.

Everton are keen to sign the winger on the permanent basis, but are believed to have baulked at Spurs reported fee of around £8million for the 28-year-old. The former-Leeds star also seems keen on a permanent move to Merseyside.

Despite the prospective presence of Lennon in the deal Spurs will still have to pay a big fee to sign McCarthy, as he still has three-years left to run on his contract and Lennon could be a free agent next summer.

There have been rumours on Merseyside in recent weeks that McCarthy was unhappy with the fact new signing Tom Cleverley is on higher wages and the Goodison Park hierarchy have not yet offered him a bumper deal at the club.

However, officially the player has not stated that he wants to leave the Toffees and they are not likely to allow the midfielder to leave without a fight this summer.

Will Tottenham sign James McCarthy this summer?
