Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal declared himself pleased with his team’s 2-1 Champions League victory over German side Bundesliga at Old Trafford, but stressed that he believed his side can still improve.

The visitors took an early lead through Daniel Caligiuri, before a Juan Mata penalty kick and a second half striker from defender Chris Smalling sealed United’s fourth straight win in all competitions.

Despite the win boss Van Gaal is seeking improvement from his team. Speaking at his press conference after the game, the veteran Dutch boss said: “We have to keep our feet on the ground and we have to improve a lot to be at the top of Europe,”

“We have beaten Wolfsburg, I am very happy and the players are very happy, but we have to improve on the second-half performance and we have to know that, and I have said that also to the players.

“That is why we are here – to improve ourselves so we win every game. We could have won this game in a better way. However, I think we deserved to win because we created much more chances that Wolfsburg.”

The win was a vital one for the Red Devils, as they suffered a 2-1 defeat in their opening Champions League game against Dutch champions PSV. Next up for United is a tough trip to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday to face Arsenal in the Premier League.

Will Manchester United now top their Champions League group?
