Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney could miss this evening’s North West derby against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Reports in the local press suggest the forward is carrying a hamstring injury, after the forward became England’s all-time leading scorer on Tuesday night.

Rooney is believed to have picked-up the injury a United’s training ground Carrington on Friday and was not with the team ahead of the clash.

Rooney could now also be a doubt for Tuesday’s trip to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.

If Rooney does not recover in time United’s new £36million signing Anthony Martial, who arrived from French Ligue One on transfer deadline day.

The 19-year-old is more accustomed to playing on the left-wing for Monaco, but has previously played as a central striker in the principality.

Louis van Gaal’s other attacking options include former-Everton star Marouane Fellaini, who has filled the role before and young striker James Wilson, who is reportedly wanted by a host of Championship clubs.

United have failed to win their last two Premier League games, after winning both their opening games 1-0 this season.

The visitors Liverpool have enjoyed a similar start to the campaign and the absence of Rooney will be a big boost ahead of their trip to old Trafford.
