According to Sky Sports, West Brom have agreed a fee of around £6million, plus £2million in add-ons with Manchester United for Northern Irish centre-back Jonny Evans.

The 27-year-old is now expected in the Midlands to have a medical ahead of the move.

The Red Devils have looked solid this season so far with Daley Blind and Chris Smalling at the heart of their defence. United also has Argentinian international Marcos Rojo and England international Phil Jones available to them.

Evans has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and struggled to play much first team football last season, making just 17 Premier League appearances having served a long ban for a spitting incident involving Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse.

West Brom have already failed in a bid to sign Tottenham’s Argentinian international centre-back Federico Fazio, after agreeing a fee with Spurs it was reported that the Baggies could not agree personal terms with the player.

Evans has enjoyed a trophy-laden career at Old Trafford, winning the Premier League title on three occasions with the Red Devils.

The arrival of Evans at the Hawthorns is likely to signal the end of Joleon Lescott’s Baggies career, with the former-Manchester City defender close to a £1million move to Aston Villa.

That fee could potentially rise to a fee of around £2million depending on appearances.

Lescott has been left out of the last two Premier League games, after starting the opening game against Manchester City. It seems he is deemed surplus to requirements at the Hawthorns.

Is Jonny Evans the man to shore up the Baggies defence?
