According to Philippe Lamboley, agent of Manchester United striker Anthony Martial, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger turned down the chance to sign the highly-rated youngster because he believed he was a winger.

The versatile 19-year-old joined Manchester united on transfer deadline day from Monaco for a fee in the region of £36million, which could eventually rise to £58million with add-ons.

Martial has not made a bad start to his United career as a striker though, scoring four times in four appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions.

Arsenal had been linked with a move for Martial for a while, and also linked with a move for a striker, so the link with Martial was understandable. Wenger had even claimed that he had followed Martial’s career very closely.

Lamboley told Sky Sports: “Anthony is a true modern centre-forward who can play a part. I am surprised by the analysis of Arsene Wenger, who has apparently been following him since he was a teenager.

“If the analysis Arsene Wenger has made is in order to justify not having signed Anthony, I accept he is a winger. But in football, there are those who follow players and those who buy them.”

It seems that Monsieur Wenger may just have dropped a ball on this one and could just be looking towards Old Trafford with an envious eye over the next few years.

Should Arsenal have made a move for Anthony Martial?
