Could Liverpool’s Rickie Lambert replace Didier Drogba at Chelsea?

According to the Daily Mirror, Premier League champions Chelsea could be set to make a move for Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert this summer.

The 33-year-old is being considered as an option to replace fellow veteran Didier Drogba, whose future at the Bridge is in doubt.

Drogba is out-of-contract and it is unclear if he will be offered a new deal to stay with the Premier League champions for next season, despite scoring a few crucial goals this season.

At 37-years-old he has obviously not had the same impact as in his first spell with the club, but he has certainly not been a bad back-up to Spanish international Diego Costa.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho has claimed that owner Roman Abramovich will have the final say on whether ‘the Drog’ gets a new deal this summer, but if he does leave then he will need to be replaced and it seems Lambert could be his replacement.

The 33-year-old has struggled to command regular first team action since his £4million summer switch from Southampton, but started in the Reds 2-1 victory over QPR, which was watched by Chelsea scouts.

Prior to his underuse at Anfield, the striker was a star player at Southampton and helped the Saints to the Premier League from League One and also to maintain their place in the top-flight.

A move to the champions could prove a tempting one for the striker, but whether he would be willing to swap a seat on the Anfield substitute bench for a seat on the Stamford Bridge bench remains to be seen though.

Would Rickie Lambert be a good replacement for Didier Drogba?
