Should Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho have been more active in the transfer market this summer?

Chelsea won the Premier League title with relative ease last season, but the Blues have kicked this season off in an uncertain manner.

Jose Mourinho’s side were defeated 3-0 at title rivals Manchester City on Sunday afternoon, which meant the south west London club have taken just one point from their opening two games.

It is very early in the campaign, but already signs suggest that Chelsea are struggling to recapture the form of last season. One of the causes could have been a lack of transfer activity. Chelsea have stood still instead of improving.

Two new signings arrived in the summer in the shape of ‘keeper Asmir Begovic and striker Radamel Falcao. However, they were only coming in as replacements for the departing Petr Cech and Didier Drogba.

Essentially Chelsea started the campaign with the same options, as last season, but without an improvement in their squad.

Boss Mourinho has attempted to put that right in the last few days with the signing of Ghanaian full-back Baba Rahman from Augsburg. The highly-rated youngster has arrived at the Blues for a fee in the region of £20million.

He comes in as back-up to current left-back Cesar Azpilicueta, although the Spaniard may now switch back to his preferred right-back positon with Branislav Ivanovic starting the campaign in a poor manner.

Chelsea probably should have been more active in the transfer market this summer and strengthened from a position of power.

The season is still but young and there is still time for the Blues to turn it around, but if City continue in a similar vein for much longer they could be hard to catch at the top of the table.

Does Chelsea need to sign players before the transfer window shuts?
