According to the Daily Express, Aston Villa are set to sign veteran Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov.
The 34-year-old is available on a free transfer after leaving big spending French outfit Monaco at the end of the campaign following the expiration of his contract.
The mercurial striker is now set to travel to Birmingham on Monday for talks with Tim Sherwood and discuss terms over a possible deal.
Berbatov is Bulgaria’s record-ever goalscorer with 48 international goals and enjoyed stints at Manchester United and Fulham earlier in his career.
The veteran was also being linked with a move to newly-promoted Bournemouth. It has also been suggested that Berbatov has an offer from Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen.
Villa have been very active in the transfer market this summer, following the loss of captain Fabian Delph and top scorer Christian Benteke.
The Villans completed the double signing of striker Rudy Gestede from Blackburn and French midfielder Jordan Veretout on Friday and seem intent on doing even more business before the Premier League campaign kicks-off.
The Villans are still believed to be interested in signing Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor on a season-long deal, but a deal is yet to be completed for the Togo international.
Villa boss Tim Sherwood looks determined to avoid another close shave with relegation, after his side finished just three points and one place above the drop zone last season. It remains to be seen how all the new players will gel as a team.
Have Aston Villa been clever in the transfer market?
Come on gunners we can win this…
