According to Sky Sports and Sky Italia, Italian giants Internazionale are in talks with Tottenham to sign mercurial Argentinian attacking midfielder Erik Lamela.

Lamela was regarded as one of the hottest young attacking players in European football when he moved to Spurs from Roma in 2013 for £25million. He had just come off the back of scoring 15 goals in Serie A for the Giallorossi and was highly-rated in Italy.

Lamela was earmarked as a direct replacement for the outgoing Gareth Bale, but he has been unable to justify his fee and struggled to adjust to the pace and physical nature of the English game.

The playmaker has managed to score just two Premier League goals in two seasons in the English top-flight, which by anybody’s standards is a poor return for a supposed quality player.

The Argentinian international is still highly-regarded in Italy though and a move back to Serie A may revive his career, after two very disappointing campaigns in north London.

Sky claim that Inter are also interested in Wolfsburg’s Croatian playmaker Ivan Perisic, but the Wolves are unlikely to sell him with Belgian star Kevin De Bruyne currently being heavily linked with a move elsewhere, with Manchester City believed to be a possible destination for the former-Chelsea star.

Inter boss Roberto Mancini is believed to be interested in signing a new winger, or attacking midfielder and Lamela could provide the answer.

No doubt talented, but simply not made for the rigours of the Premier League, the Argentinian could once again discover his top form in Serie A in Milan.

Can Erik Lamela fulfil his potential in Serie A?
