England international striker Rickie Lambert endured a frustrating debut campaign at his boyhood club Liverpool last season.
The 33-year-old striker made 36 appearances in all competitions last season and scored just three goals. However the majority of his appearances for the Reds came from the bench.
His £4million summer move to Liverpool was a perplexing one, as Lambert knew his first team chances would be limited on Merseyside. Despite Liverpool struggling to score goals Lambert still could not command a regular place in the Liverpool team.
Prior to his move to Merseyside, Lambert had played a key part in Southampton’s rise up the leagues. Lambert was a hero at the Saints, but could not turn down a move to the club he supported as a boy.
Lambert will be further down the striking pecking order at Liverpool in the new season after the arrival of Danny Ings from Burnley and the impending arrival of Christian Benteke from Aston Villa.
A number of clubs have been linked with a move for the striker and he has even been linked with a move to Villa as a replacement for Benteke. However, it is the Villans Midlands rivals West Brom who have emerged as favourites to sign the former-Rochdale striker this summer.
Lambert still has enough ability and intelligence to continue his career in the Premier League. He has worked too hard to get to the top not to make the most if it now he is there. I am sure he would be a good signing for any of the teams looking to finish in midtable, or fighting for their top-flight lives.
