Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has urged the clubs owners to give Brendan Rodgers a decent transfer kitty this summer

Outgoing Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has called on Liverpool’s owners to hand boss Brendan Rodgers decent money to spend this summer.

The veteran midfielder will play his last ever game at Anfield this weekend as the Reds face Crystal Palace.

The Reds midfielder is right about the need for investment in the squad this summer.

The Reds were considered by many to be title challengers at the beginning of the season, yet they have failed to even finish in the top four of the Premier League.

The team maybe overachieved last season with the goal hungry (and at times person hungry) Luis Suarez leading the line. He was always going to be impossible to replace and the Reds remaining players have struggled to get to grips with life without the Uruguayan.

Liverpool does need some quality added to their squad, but I believe many Reds fans have lost faith in Rodgers when it comes to his transfer policy. Very few of Rodgers signings have been successful.

Rodgers has brought in young players such as Lazar Markovic, Alberto Moreno and Emre Can, who all could still develop into good players in the future.

Can has already produced some good performances in his short Liverpool career, as has Moreno, but the jury seems to still be out on Moreno.

Despite the promise shown by the likes of Can and Moreno, Liverpool need to sign players who are first team ready now and not four or five years down the line.

In fact Brendan Rodgers career as Liverpool boss could very well depend on his signings this summer.

Rodgers has to do far better in the summer transfer window or he could be heading for the Anfield exit door in the not so distant future.

Can Liverpool sign quality players this summer?
