Chelsea and Manchester City are reportedly in talks to sign Alex Song from Barcelona

According to Sky Sports, both Chelsea and Manchester City have held talks with Barcelona defensive midfielder Alex Song, who is rated in the £5million bracket.

The defensive midfielder was at Arsenal for six years before moving to Catalonia in 2012.

Loan

Song spent last season on-loan at Premier League West Ham and made 28 appearances for the East End side.

The Irons are desperate to make his temporarily move a permanent one this summer. However it appears they have some major competition for the midfields signature.

With two of the biggest clubs in the Premier League now believed to be in talks to complete the signing of the 27-year-old. The Hammers may just have to look elsewhere.

Competition

Chelsea already have a strong squad, but beyond Nemanja Matic are slightly short of quality in terms of defensive midfielders. Song could provide a bargain addition to their squad this summer.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho has yet to sign any players this summer and the fact that Song is considered a home-grown player would also be a bonus.

Manchester City enjoyed a disappointing campaign last time out and are expected to make major changes to their playing staff this summer. City are looking for quality additions and also home-grown players, Song would fit into both brackets.

Bargain

Alex Song could be a bargain at £5million. He does have a tendency to be slightly inconsistent, but for the mooted fee it is unlikely that either City nor Chelsea are going to get another player of his ability for the same price.

Who will sign Alex Song this summer?
