Liverpool striker Christian Benteke is set to have an MRI scan later today to establish the extent of the strikers hamstring injury picked-up in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Norwich.

The Belgian international was taken off at half-time in the Norwich clash as a precaution and replaced by goalscorer Danny Ings.

The striker has scored twice in the Premier League for the team from Merseyside since his £32.5million move from Aston Villa in the summer, including an acrobatic effort against Manchester United in a 3-1 defeat.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Carlisle in the Capital One Cup this evening, reds assistant manager Gary McAllister said: “Christian is going to have an MRI scan today and hopefully we’ll find the problem. He’s got a little problem in his hamstring,”

Benteke has been the focal point of the Reds attack this season and was starting alongside England international Daniel Sturridge for the first time against the Canaries. Sturridge has been injury-plagued in the last year and was a surprise starter against the Premier League new boys.

It seems like Sturridge may be called upon to lead the Reds front line at Carlisle, as he attempts to get back to full fitness.

Can Benteke and Sturridge forge an effective partnership when fit?
