Manchester United defeated reigning champions and arch-rivals Manchester City 4-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday. The win took the Red Devils four points clear of City in the race for automatic Champions League qualification.

City started the stronger the two teams and took the lead on eight minutes, as David Silva found Sergio Aguero who had the simple task of tapping home from a few yards out.

United came back at the visitors and winger Ashley Young equalised from close range on 14 minutes. The home side took the lead on 27 minutes, as Marouane Fellaini peeled off to the back post to head home powerfully past Joe Hart from a superb Ashley Young cross.

The home side extended their lead midway through the second half. Wayne Rooney put Juan Mata through on goal and the Spaniard fired low past Hart in the City goal.

United extended their lead on soon afterwards, as England international centre-back Chris Smalling headed home from a corner kick.

The visitors scored a late consolation goal through Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero, but it meant very little to the end result. The strike was the 100th goal that the diminutive striker has scored for the Citizens though.

The win leaves the Red Devils just a point behind second-place Arsenal in the Premier League table. However, City will be looking over their shoulders nervously, as Liverpool can move to within four points of the Citizens with a victory over Newcastle at Anfield on Monday night.

Are Manchester United now top dogs in Manchester?
