Manchester United players look dejected after the Red Devils 2-1 defeat against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League

Manchester United suffered a Champions League setback on Tuesday night, after being beaten 2-1 by Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven at the Philips Stadion.

To make matters worse Reds Devils full-back Luke Shaw also sustained a broken leg, after a strong challenge from PSV defender Hector Moreno in the first half. The game was then delayed by ten minutes.

United took the lead just as PSV were getting into the game. It was former-PSV star Memphis Depay who came back to haunt the Dutch side. The winger took on Santiago Arias and Jeffrey Bruma, before firing a low shot past Marcel Zoet in the PSV goal.

Philip Cocu’s side were back on level terms in first half stoppage-time. Moreno was involved again, as the Mexican defender saw his header towards goal deflect off Daley Blind and defeat David de Gea in the United goal.

United dominated possession in the early stages of the second half, but it was the home side who struck again on 57 minutes. Maxime Lestienne’s cross found winger Luciano Narsingh at the far post and his header beat De Gea in the United goal.

United searched in vain for an equaliser, as Juan Mata and Anthony Martial both missed good chances to rescue a point for Louis van Gaal’s side. In the end PSV stood firm and moved top of Group A.

Did United deserve to lose in Eindhoven?
