Spanish giants Real Madrid have terminated the contract of boss Carlo Ancelotti after the team finished the season trophyless.

The Italian had been in charge of Los Blancos for two years and took over from now-Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho in the Spanish capital.

The decision was not really a surprise one, as the Real Madrid hierarchy is notoriously impatient with their bosses. They usually do not last long and some are even fired after collecting silverware.

Ancelotti made history by guiding Los Blancos to their tenth European Cup last season and was regarded as a hero in the Spanish capital. Just under a year on and he is out of a job and set to take time out of football to have a back operation.

The Italian is one of the most successful bosses in the history of European football and is also regarded as one of the best as well. Where Real go from here is hard to say.

The likes of Rafa Benitez, Jurgen Klopp and Zinedine Zidane are currently the three favourites for the Real hot seat. Whoever comes in will have to deal with the big egos in the Los Blancos dressing room.

The club from the Spanish capital have now claimed just one Spanish league title in the last seven years and one European Cup in the last 12 years.

Real Madrid may be seen as the perennial winners of European football, but the above record shows that something is going wrong behind the scenes and it may have nothing to do with who sits in the Bernabeu dugout.

Who should replace Ancelotti as Real Madrid boss?
