Former-Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has joined New York Red Bulls on a free transfer.

The veteran winger joins his brother Bradley Wright-Phillips in New York, who was the Red Bulls top scorer last season.

Wright-Phillips was a free agent after his lucrative contract with QPR expired earlier this summer.

The former England international had travelled to New York to train and keep himself in shape following leaving the Hoops. He impressed sporting director Ali Curtis enough to win a contract with the Red Bulls.

Curtis told the Red Bulls official website: “Shaun is a proven player who has played on soccer’s largest stage. He can play a number of positions for us and is an excellent fit in our locker room.

“When we evaluated the unique set of circumstances along with the quality that Shaun has, it became apparent that we needed to be aggressive about adding Shaun to our club.”

The 33-year-old could make his MLS debut in next weekend’s visit to Philadelphia Union. Wright-Phillips has not played much football in recent seasons.

The winger started just one Premier League game last season and only made three substitute appearances.

In fact the previous campaign he had made just four starts in the Championship for the Hoops and seven substitute appearances.

The veteran star will be hoping he features more regularly in the MLS as he tries to make the most of the remaining years of his career.

Despite his lack of action Wright-Phillips could still be a big draw in the American top-flight and will bring a wealth of experience to the Red Bulls team.

Can Wright-Phillips regain his top form in MLS?
