Southampton are reportedly set to complete the permanent transfer of Chelsea defensive midgielder Oriel Romeu

According to Sky Sports, Southampton could be about to complete the permanent signing of Spanish midfielder Oriel Romeu from Chelsea.

The midfielder is believed to have had a medical and agreed personal terms with the Saints.

When Romeu joined Chelsea from Spanish giants Barcelona in 2011 he was regarded as a bright prospect and expected to have a bright future at Stamford Bridge.

However, the 23-year-old has gone on to make just 22 Premier League appearances for the Blues, of which 11 came in his first campaign with the London club.

The midfielder has enjoyed loan spells at Valencia and last season at Stuttgart. Romeu made 27 Bundesliga appearances for VFB, which amounted to more league appearances he has in the whole total of his Chelsea career.

The German club were believed to be interested in keeping the midfielder on a permanent basis, but a permanent deal never materialised.

Romeu has represented Spain at every level up to under-23 level and will be looking to kick-start his Premier League career on the south coast.

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman is still looking to strengthen in the central of midfield after losing French star Morgan Schneiderlin to Manchester United this summer. Koeman has already brought in compatriot Jordy Clasie from Feyenoord, but is obviously looking to further strengthen.

Southampton kicked-off their Premier League campaign with a 2-2 draw at Newcastle on Saturday.

Will Oriel Romeu be a good signing for Southampton?
