According to Sky Sports, Chelsea are close to agreeing a fee with German club Augsburg for highly-rated left-back Baba Rahman.

A fee of around £20million has been mooted, as the Blues look to strengthen their squad.

The 21-year-old Ghana international has just helped the minnows to a fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga table and was one of their standout performers.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has stated that he believes his squad is strong enough, but if there was a new arrival then it is likely to be a left-back.

The reigning Premier League champions have just one left-back available to them in Cesar Azpilicueta, who is actually a converted right-back.

The Blues are in need of a replacement for Brazilian full-back Felipe Luis, who returned to La Liga side Atletico Madrid this summer after just a year in the Premier League.

Rahman is considered an exciting young prospect and should be a very able deputy, or even competitor to Azpilicueta for that left-back role.

Meanwhile Chelsea are to appeal Thibaut Courtois’ red card from Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Swansea at Stamford Bridge. The young Belgian ‘keeper was dismissed for bringing down Swans forward Bafetimbi Gomis.

Referee Michael Oliver awarded the Welsh side a penalty kick and dismissed Courtois. The red card has become one of the contentious issues of the opening weekend of the Premier League campaign.

Respected former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has praised the match official for the decision to dismiss Courtois.

Will Baba Rahman be able to compete with Azpilicueta for the left-back spot at Chelsea?
