Southampton have completed the season-long loaning signing of Fulham ‘keeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

The 32-year-old Holland international has a wealth of experience at both club and international level.

Experienced

Stekelenburg started his career at Ajax where he made his full debut under current Saints boss Ronald Koeman. He then moved to Serie A with Roma, where he stayed just two years before joining Fulham in 2013.

He spent just one season at Craven Cottage, before making a season-long loan move to Ligue One club Monaco last summer. He made just one league appearance and eight appearances in all competitions for the club from the principality.

Cover

Stekelenburg has been brought in to cover for the absence of England international ‘keeper Fraser Forster who picked-up a long-term injury in March in the Saints win over Burnley.

Forster could miss the majority of next season, so the team from the south coast were in need of cover.

Stekelenburg has big shoes to fill, in more sense than one, as former-Celtic star Forster enjoyed a superb debut campaign for the Saints.

Busy

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman has already been busy in the transfer market, as Stekelenburg is the Saints third signing of the summer already.

The Saints have already brought in highly-rated striker Juanmi from Malaga and defender Cedric Soares from Sporting Lisbon.

This summer is in stark contrast to last time out, when the Saints saw a number of their top players leave for pastures new early in the summer. Koeman will be hoping he is strengthening rather than replacing this summer.

Will Maarten Stekelenburg be a good signing for Southampton?
