There was a sense of disbelief around the Emirates Stadium last night, as Arsenal were somehow beaten 1-0 by midtable Swansea.
The Gunners had suffered just one defeat in their last 34 Premier League home games, so the Swans victory was a major shock.
In truth, Swansea were on the back foot for most of the game, as Arsenal dominated possession and the Welsh side had former-Arsenal ‘keeper Lukasz Fabianski to thank for the victory.
The Polish international has played more games for Swansea this season than he did in the whole of his seven years in north London.
He produced save after save to keep the home side at bay in the last 20 minutes. Opposite number David Ospina did not exactly cover himself in glory with the Swansea goal, as the Colombian let Bafetimbi Gomis’ tame header go over his goal line. Fabianski must have been delighted with his performance on his old stomping ground.
Arsenal have been irresistible at times going forward this season, but for the first hour of this match failed to get a shot on target. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger moaned after the game that Swansea came to defend.
Well Professor that is what teams with smaller budgets have to do at times in the Premier League and the Swans did that superbly, while obviously riding their luck at times.
It was a smash and grab by anybody’s standards, but at the end of the day Arsenal did not have enough guile or creativity to break the Swansea defence down and it was that simple.
