According to the Daily Mirror, Swansea City are set to make a £4million move for Sunderland and Scotland striker Steven Fletcher.
The striker arrived from Burnley for a fee of £12million in 2012, but injuries have meant he has not been able to hit top form for the Black Cats.
He enjoyed an impressive start to his Sunderland career, ironically scoring twice on his debut against Swansea in a 2-2 draw.
The former-Hibs striker registered 11 Premier League goals in his debut campaign for the Black Cats, but has not been able to repeat that feat due to the aforementioned injury problems.
Fletcher is in the final year of his contract with the Wearsider’s, so Swans boss Garry Monk is hoping to secure the forward in a cut-price deal.
Monk is looking to strengthen his forward line after losing Ivory Coast striker Wilfried Bony in January. There is also speculation over the future of first choice striker Bafetimbi Gomis, who has been linked with a lucrative move to the Middle East.
Monk has already brought in Portuguese international Eder from Braga, but it does not seem like he is satisfied with his forward options.
Celtic were also believed to be interested in signing the Scotland international, but the Hoops assistant boss John Collins recently stated that the SPL champions could not afford Fletcher’s Premier League wages.
The move would be a gamble by the Swans considering Fletcher’s injury history. However he has scored goals in the Premier League in the past when he has been fit, so maybe it could be a gamble worth taking.
